Secular force like YPG needs support

The fight against Islamic State militants in Syria is getting complicated with each passing days. Fighting has broken out between Turkey, pro-Turkish rebels and Kurdish-aligned forces in northern Syria. All these forces are supposed to be together in the fight against IS. Turkish forces have attacked what they say are Kurdish "terrorists" since crossing the border last week. But the Kurdish YPG militia says Turkey just wants to occupy Syrian territory. Ankara says it aims to push both IS and Kurdish fighters away from its border.

A US-backed alliance between the YPG and some Syrian Arabs called the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) has been advancing and taking over strategic areas from various armed Islamist groups despite Turkey's ongoing bombardments. It scored a notable success by driving IS out of the crossroads town of Manbij this month. The jihadists were forced to retreat to the town of Jarablus on the Turkish border, which is believed to be the next focus of the advance against IS. Turkey is getting wary of the Kurds trying to gain control near its border with Syria. But US and other western countries sees YPG as the best force to defeat IS. Comprising mostly of Kurds, YPG has even some foreign fighters in its rank including American and British citizens. US have supplied weapon and even trained YPG fighters. US is now caught between NATO ally Turkey and its Kurdish ally in Syria. For the larger interest of international community Turkey should stop shelling and attacking Kurdish forces. Secular forces like YPG are the need of the hour. They have shown to the rest of the world that in places like Syria still there exist some group which believes in humanity and democratic values. US should intervene and try to resolve this issue at the earliest.

The lost tribe

Dear Editor,

"We used to drink and sing and dance merrily in festivals...now people drink to forget their worries."

Swimming in a pool of story pertaining to the soon-to-be- a lost tribe, imagining how would the cultural identity of a tribe precipitate in a thin air leaving behind only stories for the generation that has camouflage themselves in to the mainstream, supposedly for their advancement. How development lollipop given to them turnout to be a bombshell burying them in a rubble of ruined what was once their ancestor land.

The story of Jarawa tribe that now find themselves surrounded in a land that is slipping away from their feet in Andaman and Nicobar island.

I am not well acquaint with all the revolution that had happened around the world which later shaped the world in good or bad, but every revolution brought a sea of change that either drown people to death or change the structure of the way world existed into something compatible and uplifting humanitarianism.

The revolution that is being carried on in the name of development has made tribal people to seek refuge out of their homeland only to see their cultural identity being buried, like a sloping roof that makes rain water slip away into the ground that later leaves behind no traces of rain which could have rather been preserved for our own use. Tribal people don't want to remain in a primitive world when few kilometers away there is a whole different world but at the same time they don't want exploitation to happen in the name of development. What they need is a development that is mixed of just and judicious. A development that value the umbilical cord one tribal attached with its ancestral land. A heritage land upon which their ancestors were buried; land which give them a temple-like-peace or church-like-peace or mosque-like-peace etc. I reckon that the shadow of lost tribe is hovering around our tribe, a tribe that is being categorised as endangered and now this word of development making inroad in our land will only bring down the flag of ours which was once held high above, moving in air with pride.

It saddens to see the once still-pending development being stamped by a seal of confirmation followed by the fervour for compensation taking its toll on the valley. Where stories of people engaging in fist and yell moment made us seem like a scavengers fiddling hands through dustbin to get hold of something to feed their empty stomach.

We surely will have our own stories to share with the lineage that find themselves less cultural and highly modernised; modern with feeble roots.

"Enforced development is often a cover for land theft."

Yours,

T Menjo, Roing

Overstaying the tenure

Dear Editor,

It has been observed that the officers who are staying in their posting places, especially in Bomdila, for more than 3 years are not found in their offices. They are found doing businesses. They become very arrogant and do not attend to the public. Most of the engineers who have completed more than 3 years of service need to be transferred for smooth functioning of the offices and better delivery. We would like to request the Govt. to follow the Govt. notifications regarding transfer and posting policy and transfer all the officers, to other places who have completed their tenure of 3 years here.

Yours,

A citizen,  Bomdila
